Understanding the Keyword Difficulty Score

A deep dive into how Keyword Revealer calculates the KD score and strategies for finding low-hanging fruit in search.

The Keyword Difficulty (KD) Metric

Keyword Difficulty (KD) is the foundational metric of Keyword Revealer. It predicts how difficult it will be to rank in the top 10 organic search results for a specific query.

How KD is Calculated

When you click 'Evaluate' on a keyword, our system pulls real-time data from the current Google Top 10 SERP. We analyze the strength of the ranking domains based on:

  • Domain Authority / Trust Flow
  • Page Authority / Citation Flow
  • On-Page Optimization (Exact match in Title, URL, H1)
  • Backlink Profile (Number of referring domains and external links)

The Scoring Scale (0-100)

  • 0 - 20 (Extremely Low): Perfect for new websites with zero authority. You can often rank with just strong on-page content.
  • 21 - 35 (Low): Ideal for growing sites. May require a few contextual backlinks or very thorough content.
  • 36 - 60 (Moderate): Suitable for established sites with an existing link profile. Expect to invest in targeted link building.
  • 61 - 100 (High/Extreme): Reserved for massive brands and authority sites. Avoid these unless you have extremely high Domain Authority.

Finding 'Low-Hanging Fruit'

The easiest way to find rankable keywords is to use the Filters in the Keyword Suggestion tool. Set max KD to 30 and search for long-tail variations containing 3 or more words.
