How to Check if ChatGPT Cites Your Website (and Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews)

When a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best tool for X" or "who is the best agency in Y", the answer cites a few sources. Knowing whether you're one of them is now as important as knowing your Google rank.
How Do You Check if ChatGPT Cites Your Website?
To check if ChatGPT cites your website, ask it the questions your buyers actually ask with web search enabled and look for your domain in the cited sources. To check reliably across many prompts and all major engines, run the same prompts through an AI visibility tool such as Keyword Revealer, which queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews live and records every domain each answer cites.

See this keyword's difficulty score →Step 1: Write 5–10 Buyer Prompts
Use the questions a buyer would type, not your keywords:
- "best [category] tool for [audience]"
- "[competitor] alternatives"
- "best [service] in [city]"
- "how do I [job your product does]"
Step 2: Check Each Engine
| Engine | Where citations appear |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT (search on) | Source links under and inside the answer |
| Perplexity | Numbered sources at the top of the answer |
| Gemini | Source chips and links in the answer |
| Google AI Overviews | Citation cards beside the overview |
Doing this by hand for 10 prompts × 4 engines is 40 checks per week. An AI visibility tool automates it and stores the history.
Step 3: Calculate Your Share of Citations
Share of citations = answers that cite your domain ÷ answers measured × 100. Only count answers the engine actually returned — an engine error is not a "not cited" result.
Step 4: Note Who Is Cited Instead
The domains cited in your place are your target list. When we measured our own site on 10 buyer prompts in September 2026, we scored 0% across 28 answers, and the most-cited sources were list articles (zapier.com, onelittleweb.com, techradar.com, medium.com) rather than other tools. That tells you the fix: get included in those articles, and publish pages that answer the prompt more directly than they do.
Step 5: Fix, Then Re-Measure Weekly
- Put a 40–60-word direct answer at the top of the page that targets the prompt.
- Phrase headings as questions.
- Add FAQPage schema.
- Add original data.
- Re-run the same prompts next week and compare.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my website?
Usually because other sources answer the prompt more directly or are already trusted for the topic. Ranking on Google does not guarantee a ChatGPT citation.
Is checking ChatGPT manually accurate?
Only as a spot check. Answers vary by phrasing, location and time. Measure a fixed prompt set on a schedule.
Can I check Google AI Overviews for free?
Yes — the free AI Citation Score checker checks three keywords with no signup.
